From individual devotion to collective change: What can embodied experience do?

Absztrakt:

Many works on devotion concern individual gestures (prayer, bodily gestures, reading, cult of saints), or/and individual figures (devotion of X  / devotion to Y); others study rituals, civic or religious, in their context (cult of saints, specific processions, liturgy). Yet in (medieval) reality, individual and collective devotion and gestures  developed generally in a continuum, that our work needs to reconstruct as much as possible. This lecture proposes to work on this relationship in order to better understand the experience of participants, and to reflect together on the agency of a holistic experience in both cases, taking as an example devotional weeping - and from then, cases of different collective devotions inside or outside of liturgical frameworks between the 11th and 13th centuries. 

Starting from an anthropological analysis of the devotional gesture known as ‘gift of tears’ as intimate ritual, in an old article of mine written at Collegium Budapest, I propose to turn to collective devotional practices of the 11^th-13^th centuries and reflect on the ways by which they act at several levels, creating or enacting a collective agency or even identity that can unite, confirm or disrupt communities.
